FAQ

1. What is raw food? Is everything cold?

A raw food diet, often called raw foodism or raw veganism is composed of eating mostly or completely raw and unprocessed plant-based, and preferably organic foods, not foods that have been refined, pasteurized, homogenized, or produced with the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, solvents, and food additives. Most people who follow the raw food diet eat only plant based foods, making it a vegan diet made up mostly of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

People follow the raw food diet for the benefits they believe it has, including weight loss, improved vitality, increased energy, reversing the effects of aging, improvement to chronic diseases, improved overall health and well being, and a reduced impact on the environment.

While there are numerous variations of the raw food diet today, it typically involves food that hasn’t been cooked, processed, microwaved, irradiated, or genetically engineered. This diet excludes any food heated beyond a certain temperature, usually between 104 to 118 degrees. The only heating allowed is with a dehydrator, which is a device that blows hot air across food.

Cooking foods is harmful to human health because it destroys the natural enzymes in foods, reduces their nutrient content and reduces the “life force” that exists in all raw or “living” foods

When preparing food in a raw food diet, people tend to follow certain strategies, such as soaking, sprouting, dehydrating, blending and juicing foods. The diet allows for chopping and blending.

You won’t be limited to cold food on a raw food diet. This is a myth that many long-term raw foodists still don’t know is false. In fact, anything you eat can be warmed up, so long as it doesn’t get heated above 118 degrees F. Food can be warmed up in a dehydrator, or, for a more handy method, warm up soups and dishes by using a steamer or the warming plate of a coffee maker.

The following foods are suitable for most raw food diets:

  • Raw fruits and vegetables
  • Dried fruits and vegetables
  • Freshly made fruit and vegetable juices
  • Raw and sprouted nuts and seeds
  • Raw nut butters, such as almond or cashew butter
  • Nut milks, including almond milk
  • Coconuts
  • Cold-pressed oils such as olive, coconut, flax and hemp
  • Nutritional yeast
  • Seaweeds
  • Green powders, such as dried wheatgrass or algae
  • Fermented foods, including kimchi and sauerkraut
  • Purified water, but not tap
  • Other organic, natural, or unprocessed foods

Foods to avoid:

  • Cooked fruits, vegetables, meats and grains
  • Baked items
  • Roasted nuts and seeds
  • Refined oils
  • Table salt
  • Refined sugar and flour
  • Pasteurized juices and dairy
  • Roasted coffee, alcohol, boiled tea
  • Pasta
  • Pastries and chips
  • Other processed foods and snacks

2. What does it mean to eat a high vibrational diet?

A high vibrational diet consists of foods that are Alive with energy and that positively benefit the person, as well as the planet as a whole. High vibration means having more light, and thus less density. Plants exemplify this by photosynthesizing light into energy. In desiring to become more enlightened, you will naturally find yourself lightening up. In the meantime, you can prepare your body and mind for new levels of consciousness with nourishing, high vibrational foods.

Some believe that what you put in your mouth determines your “Light” properties. You can transform your spirituality and health by eating “light foods”. Eating light foods can raise your vibrational frequency and consciousness. Change your diet, change your world!

3. What does organic mean and why do we only use organic?

USDA certified organic foods are grown and processed according to federal guidelines addressing, among many factors, soil quality, animal raising practices, pest and weed control, and use of additives. Organic producers rely on natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods to the fullest extent possible.

Organic is free of GMO’s (genetically modified organisms), grown without the use of pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers, and weedkillers. It also means it does not contain artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, or chemicals.

Organic food is healthier for your body, the soil (not polluting soil, earth, acid rain, ozone, animals in the wild, altering natural ecosystem).

Organic foods contain more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and micronutrients than conventionally raised foods.

Organic food supports local farmers instead of big pharma, monsanto, and other big chain brand food companies that are not for the wellbeing of the planet or people.

Organic farming never uses sewage sludge. Sewage sludge is a product of wastewater treatment and contains numerous known and unknown hazardous materals - including everything that is flushed into the sewer system. Once treated, sewage sludge can be applied to agricultural cropland as fertilizer -meaning, this chemical soup that is often full of toxic compounds, nanomaterial, hormones and dangerous pathogens, are applied to the very food we eat. But not Organic food!

Organic food is never irradiated. Irradiated food is exposed to an intense ionizing radiation. This is done in a processing room for a specified duration. With food irradiation, radiant energy (electrons, gamma rays or x-rays) breaks chemical bonds and the intention is to reduce microorganisms. The concern is that radiation is known to cause cancer.

Organic farming supports carbon sequestration, which helps to mitigate rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. The primary benefit of organic crop and livestock production, compared to conventional agriculture, is that it is focused on soil-based production with underlying principles of maintaining or improving soil quality. Healthy soil counteracts climate change by pulling carbon out of the atmosphere.

Organic farms and crops are pollinator-friendly and protect bees, pollinators, and wildlife from toxic chemicals. A number of studies have demonstrated that organic farming practices alleviate many threats to honey bees.

Organic farming doesn’t expose neighboring communities and farmworkers to dangerous persistent pesticides. Choosing organic protects streams and lakes downstream from toxic runoff that conventional farming produces.

Eating Organic can reduce your risk of cancer.

4. How do we prepare the food?

Soaking, sprouting, blending, juicing, and dehydating. Dishes can be warmed in toaster or steamer but not long enough for the internal temperature to go above 118 degrees F.

5. Why do we make everything from scratch?

So we know what is in it and to be sure that it is raw and fresh. Also to make sure it is not processed or containing preservatives or additives.

6. What does acrylamide mean?

Acrylamide is a carcinogenic chemical (potential to cause cancer) that can form naturally in certain types of starchy foods from chemical reactions during high-temperature cooking processes, such as frying, roasting, and baking. Acrylamide in food forms from sugars and an amino acid called asparagine, that are naturally present in food; it does not come from packaging or the environment.

Some foods with higher levels of acrylamide include French fries, potato chips, foods made from grains (such as breakfast cereals, crackers, cookies, and toast), roasted coffee, canned black olives, and prune juice.

Acrylamide levels in food vary widely depending on the manufacturer, the cooking time, and the method and temperature of the cooking process. Heavy crisping, browning, and frying all increase the acrylamide content of the food. Acrylamide can affect the nervous system and can cause cancer.

7. Why do we use honey and why do we use honey pacifica?

“Honey Pacifica Cold Packed honey is left unheated, unfiltered, and unprocessed in order to give you the rawest honey possible keeping the enzymes and nutrients entact for your benefit. In addition, leaving the honey unfiltered and unprocessed, all the nutritious pollen and propolis fragments remain. We only skim off the wax that floats at the top. The reason unprocessed cold packed honey is so hard to find is that it is too thick to bottle by machine. Honey pacifica does the hard work that other companies will not do, bottling our unprocessed Cold packed honey by hand. It’s simply honey from bees to you!”. “Since 1978 Honey Pacifica has worked in the raw honey business giving us the knowledge to get you the highest quality raw honey available. In order to preserve the delicate flavors of the raw honey we make each flavor ourselves. We drive our bees to various bee sites located throughout sunny Southern California. The bees will fly for miles finding the blooms and bringing the nectar back to the hive. The flavor of the honey depends on the nectar blooming at that particular time.”

Honey doesn’t rot or go bad. It has therapeutic benefits such as:

  • Healthy weight management
  • Counters pollen allergies
  • Natural energy source
  • Antioxidant powerhouse
  • Sleep aid
  • Wound and ulcer healer
  • Diabetes aid
  • Natural cough syrup
  • Antibacterial

8. What’s the difference between pink salt and table salt and why do we only use pink salt?

Low blood sodium is common among adults. Also known as hyponatremia, sodium deficiency occurs in about 20% of those admitted to hospital and 10% of people during or after an endurance sporting event. Symptoms can include irritability, muscle weakness, spasms or cramps, or even seizures. This can be prevented by getting enough sodium and electrolytes in one's diet. But not all salt is created equal. Table salt is what is commonly found in most restaurants and processed foods. It is stripped of minerals, contains anti-caking agents, and has a higher sodium content. Too much of this kind of salt can cause high blood pressure and water retention which puts strain on your heart, arteries, kidneys, and brain. It can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease. Pink salt on the other hand is pure and unrefined and contains 84 trace minerals. It has a lower sodium content and better flavor and texture. Avoiding heavily processed foods and making sure to get enough of the right kind of salt in your diet is the best way to prevent sodium deficiency.

9. What is a dehydrator?

A dehydrator is a device or basically a big box with a fan which enables warm air to circulate around inside to remove water or moisture from food. You can make things crunchy to give raw foods a cooked food feel without heating above 118 F. Some of the raw food dishes made in the dehydrator are crackers, wraps, granola, pizza crust. Jerky, raw burgers, etc.

10. Why don’t we use cane sugar? What sweeteners do we use?

Cane sugar can contribute to weight gain and promote the development of chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Cane sugar spikes blood sugar since it is higher on the glycemic index. It is highly chemically processed and refined. It is heated, filtered, and bleached. Bone har is used to whiten it which is derived from animals, so it’s not vegan. It's not raw. It is highly acidic and inflammatory

We use honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, coconut blossom nectar, and dates.

HONEY…

Honey has anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties, which is why it can be used as a cough suppressant or sore throat soother. Honey is more of an actual food than sugar. It is packed with antioxidants and contains some nutrients.

COCONUT SUGAR…

It’s made from the sap of coconut trees and is less processed because the sap is extracted and then placed in heat to dry, leaving it with a more natural brownish color like raw sugar. It can also contain trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, and inulin, a prebiotic fiber.

COCONUT BLOSSOM NECTAR…

Retains its vitamins and nutrients due to the low heating process making it a smarter and healthier choice. It is sap that is collected from the flower blossom of the coconut palm tree that is crystalized to make sugar. It has the same low glycemic index as coconut sugar.

MAPLE SYRUP…

Maple syrup is not raw but is consumed by many vegans and is used in raw cooking. The good news is that you can heat maple syrup without losing it’s health benefits. Even though it is not raw, it is still pure and unprocessed. It contains various vitamins and minerals and is loaded with antioxidants

DATES…

Dates are a whole food. More specifically, dates are fresh fruit. Medjool dates are incredibly nutritious, packed with antioxitdants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. While dates are a concentrated sugar, they’re considered lower glycemic than other refined sugars. The fiber helps slow the uptake of sugar into your system, preventing drastic blood sugar spikes.

11. What kinds of oils do we use?

We use organic cold pressed oils such as olive, flaxseed, hempseed, and coconut which all contain healthy fats.

  • Pain reliever
  • High in omega 3 fatty acids
  • Promotes hair growth

12. Why do we not use low grade oils like canola?

This oil is highly processed and requires synthetic antioxidants to prevent it from going rancid too quickly. This refining method makes canola unhealthy for you in multiple ways. Also, 80% of canola plants in Canada (the number one producer of canola) are genetically modified to withstand the treatment of herbicides (like glyphosate, aka roundup, a monsanto herbicide).

The most common extraction method uses a solvent called hexane. The seeds are added to a machine along with the solvent (either hexane or a combination of chloroform and methanol), and it goes through a process of boiling, rinsing, and extracting.

This method removes and neutralizes most phytonutrient compounds.

The oil is degummed (removing lipids), neutralized, bleached, and winterized (removing waxes). Steam is applied to deodorize the oil, which creates trans fats.

Canola oxidizes easily. Oxidation is another term for “Going bad”. The monounsaturated fats make it more unstable and more prone to oxidation. This means that the oil is more sensitive to light, oxygen, and high temperatures than saturated oils. That’s why it’s necessary to add synthetic antioxidants that increase shelf life which are all potentially dangerous. Without this step, canola oil would quickly turn rancid when cooked over high heat.

9 ways canola oil can harm your health:

  1. Contains trans fats
    • increase risk of heart disease and stroke
  2. Synthetic antioxidants are harmful
    • carcinogenic and toxic effect causing stomach and liver tumors as well as liver enlargement and neurotoxicity including convulsions in vitro and in animal studies
  3. High ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids
    • Causes chronic inflammation which triggers disorders like diabetes, obesity, hypertension, arthritis, M.S., Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Asthma, Periodontitis, Colitis
  4. Reduces antioxidant protection against free radicals
    • Without these defenders, your cells are extremely vulnerable to inflammation, early aging, and multiple diseases.
  5. Impairs cognitive function
    • By reducing the strength of synapses, canola oil may put you at risk of neurodegenerative disorders and nervous system dysfunction. Research agrees that the main characteristic of Alzheimer's disease is a loss of synaptic connectivity and density in the neocortex and hippocampus.
  6. Hinders longevity and accelerates aging
  7. Triggers insulin resistance
    • Which is a precursor to type 2 diabetes
  8. Damages blood vessel function
    • Compromises cells in the interior lining of blood and lymphatic vessels that are responsible for allowing whilte blood cells and hormones into the blood, filtrating nutrients, dilating and constricting blood vessels, and blood clotting.
  9. Worsens hypertension (high blood pressure)

13. What are the benefits of raw foods or a raw vegan diet?

  • Increased energy and stamina
  • Weight loss
  • Mental clarity and focus
  • Improved skin
  • Improved health
  • Cleansing, elimination, immunity
  • Improved spirituality
  • Improved sense of well being
  • Emotional balance

  • Healthy blood from increase in chlorophyll (natural blood transfusion)
  • Lowers blood pressure and reduces risk of stoke
  • Prevents and can even reverse in some cases: cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, chronic illnesses

**Meghan Fox, Scarlotte Johanson, and Gweneth Paltrow are advocates of the raw food diet!!!

14. What does cold pressed mean?

Cold pressed refers to the method used to extract the juice from fruit and vegetables. A cold press juicer works by firstly crushing the produce than pressing the fruits and vegetables ir order to get the highest juice yield with the highest nutrient content.

Benefits of organic cold pressed juice:

  • Since no heat is involved, juices are packed with essential and easily absolbable nutrients, minerals, and enzymes
  • Certain ingredients help to reduce inflammation, ease digestive issues, improve circulation, fight toxins and boost immunity
  • Assist natural detoxification within the body
  • Low levels of oxidation results in juice that is full of flavor, color, and nutrients
  • Help to restore the natural pH balance in the body making it more alkaline preventing inflammation, cancer, etc.
  • Makes for an efficient way to increase daily intake of fruit and vegetables
  • Juices are raw and have not gone through any form of pasteurization

15. Why do we not pasteurize our juice?

There are two types of pasteurization. One type is heat pasteurization, and the other is HPP. Heat pasteurization kills all the bacteria and microorganisms in the juice, including the good kind. This leads to the loss of vitamins, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. HPP is the “cold” version of pasteurization. Juice is already bottled and ready to go, and is then subjected to an extremely high level of pressure. This process does not kill as much bacteria and microorganisms as heat pasteurization, but the good bacteria is still affected. Many people do not understand that our bodies need bacteria to thrive and grow stronger. Introducing a variety of bacteria to our bodies helps build up our immune system, while keeping the good bacteria is essential for a healthy body. When flavonoids (antioxidants in plants) and phytonutrients (nutrients that develop to protect the plant) are removed from the juice through pasteurization, our bodies do not know where to send the vitamins and nutrients that enter the body, or how to use them. Phytonutrients are used for protecting our bodies from harm, such as cell damage and inflammation. When both these things are destroyed in the process of pasteurization, we are left useless nutrients that our bodies will simply expel.

16. Why do we bottle in glass?

  1. Purity of taste. Plastic can impart various “flavors” into the liquids it comes into contact with.
  2. Won’t leach chemicals like bisphenol A, commonly called BPA. BPA is a toxic chemical commonly used in plastics. Here are some of the ways BPA can accept your health.
    • Linked to causing reproductive, immunity, and neurological problems as well as an increased likelihood of Alzheimer’s, childhood asthma, metabolic disease, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease
    • Endocrine disruptor. It can imitate the body’s hormones, and it can interfere with the production, secretion, transport, action, function, and elimination of natural hormones.
    • Can behave in a similar way to estrogen and other hormones in the body. Studies revealed links between BPA exposure and hormone-related cancers, including breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers and endometrial carcinoma.
    • BPA lingers in the body
    • Has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and liver failure

17. What does sprouting mean and why do we sprout our nuts?

Raw nuts contain a significant amount of enzyme inhibitors, which act to prevent the nut or seed from sprouting prematurely in nature. These enzyme inhibitors can bind up minerals and cause digestive strain for humans. When sprouting in the kitchen, we generally mean soaking the nuts or seeds for a certain amount of time in order to remove phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors. Germinated nuts are easier to break down in the digestive tract, leading to faster nutient absorption.

18. Why is our food temperature sensitive and why should you be very cautious when handling the food and drinks?

This movement defines “raw food” as food that is not heated/cooked above 118 degrees F. This is thought to preserve nutrients, enzymes, preserve natural life force energy, and keep food in its most natural from. We do warm pastas and soups, if someone is 100 percent raw, they may choose to have their food served cold without being warmed as not to risk the temperature going above 118F. It’s important to ask if they are on a raw vegan diet.

You must be cautious when handling food so you don't contaminate it with bacteria. We don’t cook food, so if it gets contaminated with germs, it won't get killed off in the cooking process. Proper hand washing is a must. Don’t touch dirty surfaces and then touch food or clean containers that food will go in. Customers could get sick or food poisoned. Also food could spoil if left out for too long. Always be mindful not to keep out too long or forget to put back into the fridge. Keep an eye of fridge temperatures. Wash food properly and use gloves when handling food or when working in the kitchen. Use clean sterilized containers. Change gloves in between tasks or food orders.

19. What are the ice creams made out of?

Our ice creams are coconut based made up of coconut meat, coconut butter, coconut blossom nectar, and coconut oil. Salted caramel is the only flavor that contains cashews. Almond butter cup is the only flavor that contains almonds.

20. What are enzymes and what food has enzymes?

Dr. Edward Howell, a pioneer in the field of enzyme research, said that “Life could not exist without enzymes''. Enzymes are complex proteins that convert nutrients into forms that your body can use and significantly speed up the rate of virtually all of the chemical reactions that take place within cells. They are vital for life and serve a wide range of important functions in the body, such as aiding in digestion and metabolism. They also help convert food into muscle, flesh, bone, nerves, and glands, as well as aid the eliminative functions of the kidneys, lungs, liver, skin, and colon. Cooking food can destroy the enzymes your body needs for crucial functions. When you destroy the natural enzymes in food, your body has to work extremely hard to produce the enzymes it needs. This is dangerous because it depletes what Dr. Howell calls your “enzyme bank account”. You’re born with an enzyme supply that naturally decreases with age, so the faster you empty your bank account, the shorter your life. Eating raw foods high in enzymes helps to preserve your body’s own enzyme supply.

12 foods that contain the highest enzymes…

  • Pineapples
  • Papaya
  • Mango
  • Honey
  • Bananas
  • Avocados
  • Kefir (A fermented beverage)
  • Sauerkraut
  • Kimchi
  • Kiwi fruit
  • Ginger
  • Miso

21. Why don’t we use dairy or meat products?

DAIRY…

  • High in saturated fats and cholesterol increasing rick of cardiovascular disease
  • Treated with antibiotics and growth hormones that can increase estrogen levels, bring on early puberty in children, and increase breast cancer in women
  • Casein is the most relevant cancer promoter ever discovered
  • Raises insulin levels causing type 2 diabetes
  • Linked to chronic diseases and heart disease
  • Cows milk was meant for baby cows
  • Causes weight gain and inflammation
  • Cheese has a strong opioid effect on the brain causing it to be highly addictive
  • Studies have shown that men who consume more milk and dairy products have higher levels of estradiol, a “female” hormone. This can lower the body’s production of testosterone (the primary male sex hormore) with the effect of raising voice pitches, increasing male breasts, and erectile dysfunction.
  • Milk contains pus and blood
  • Vitamins, iron, and calcium are all greatly reduced in pasteurization, while digestive enzymes are completely destroyed
  • Inhumane conditions for the animals
  • Contributes to global warming and pollution to the earth
  • Fed corn, GMO’s, and soy if they are not organic or grass fed

MEAT…

  • Significantly increases risk of cancer
  • Increases risk of heart disease and Diabetes
  • Meat carries the highest risk of foodborne illness
  • Can contribute to sexual dysfunction in men
  • Contributes to factory farming, earth pollution, world hunger (amount of food to feed animals could feed everyone on the planet)
  • May make you resistant to antibiotics
  • Uses up natural resources like fresh water
  • Contributes to deforestation to make room for farmland
  • Animals are fed corn, GMO’s and soy if not organic and grass fed
  • Contributes to inhumane animal treatment
  • Adrenaline gets released into the animal’s body right before it is slaughtered and that energy stays in the meat so in a sense you are eating the animals fear and welcoming that energy into your body.
  • Eating certain types of meat may make it harder to maintain a healthy bodyweight

22. What’s the difference between vegetarian and vegan?

Vegetarians don't eat any animals, including pigs, chickens, cows, fish, and all others. In addition to not consuming any animal flesh, a vegan also doesn’t consume dairy milk, dairy cheese, eggs, or any other product derived from an animal. Some vegans eat honey. There are different levels of vegan. Some do not use leather or buy cosmetics that were tested on animals. Plant based diet focuses primarily on eating mostly plants but doesn’t necessarily eliminate animal products such as honey for example.

23. Is everything gluten free and why?

Yes, everything is 100% gluten free. Gluten is actually a glue, which acts like a thick paste in your digestive tract. It coats the lining of your stomach and intestines, which prevents nutrients from being absorbed. Gluten has been linked to depression, mood disorders, brain fog, alzheimers, ADD, ADHD, Autism, insomnia, skin irritations, inflammation, dandruff, bloating, and neurological disorders. Gluten free diet is associated with more energy and improved digestion.

24. What is tamari?

Organic, Gluten-free Tamari is a soy sauce is made with 100% whole soybeans and no wheat. It has a richer and milder taste than regular soy sauce, perfect for soups, sauces, and marinades. It is fermented and Vegan. It’s the only soy we use.

25. What is quinoa?

Quinoa is a seed that is harvested from a tall, leafy plant that is not a cereal grass, that’s a relative of spinach, beets, and chard. So quinoa is technically classified as a pseudo-cereal grain, along with amaranth and buckwheat. Quinoa is gluten free, high in protein, and one of the few plants that contain sufficient amounts of all nine essential amino acids. Quinoa is non-GMO and usually grown organically. However, Quinoa contains a substance called phytic acid, which can bind to its minerals and reduce their absorption, so sprouting and/or soaking prior to cooking can reduce the phytic acid content making the minerals more bioavailable.

Proven health benefits of quinoa…

  • Contains plant compounds that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-cancer, and antidepressant effects in animal studies
  • Very high in fiber, much higher than most grains
  • Gluten free
  • High in protein, with all the 9 essential amino acids
  • Low glycemic index which is good for blood sugar control
  • High in important minerals like iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc
  • Can improve metabolic health by reducing blood sugar, insulin, and triglyceride levels
  • Very high in antioxidants
  • Promotes weight loss
  • Contains anti-inflammatory phytonutrients
